It seems innovation in the automotive industry is set to rise by leaps and bounds as additive manufacturing (AM) has helped to illustrate the possibilities of going beyond just prototyping, and more towards final production of durable parts. Unlike traditional automotive manufacturing, additive manufacturing technology is the next-generation revolution in building cars that leave behind a comparatively smaller environmental impact. For the automotive industry, these advances have opened doors to newer designs, cleaner, lighter, and safer products, shorter lead times and lower costs. AM provides improved functionalities such as integrated electrical wiring (through hollow structures), lower weight (through lattice structures), and complex geometries that are not possible using traditional manufacturing processes. Utilizing lightweight lattice structures which can be 3D printed as an integral component of the body panels, Hexaflex, unlike other lattices, has specific channels where electrical harnesses for example, can be routed. It can also be layered upon itself to provide additional energy absorption.
